Powerlifting

Popular event also known as 'weightlifting' and has been at the Paralympics since 1964. Men and Women each compete in 10 body weight categories(see below).

A minimum disability must be present and an ability to straighten both arms from a lying position, but there is no seperate classification for type of disability.

To attain a clean lift the bar is lowered from the supports to the chest then must be straight arm lifted and then held immobile until the referee signals. Each athlete has 3 attempts at a successful lift and disqualification occurs for non-clean lifts, exceeding time of 2 minutes from referees start signal, changing position or touching stands/assistants.
