Profiles of some of the Nations at
the Paralympics 2004
Malaysia
Malaysia made Paralympics history in Atlanta 1996 as the 100th Paralympic Nation to participate in a Gold Medal event. Then they competed in the Powerlifting event. |
Scheduled to send 17 athletes to Athens, Malaysia will be hoping to win their first Paralympic medal. They have every chance of fighting for a place with representation in athletics(2), swimming(2), judo(3), archery(2), powerlifting(7) and fencing(1).
Women's powerlifter Siow Lee Chan, currently world ranked 8th in the under 60 kilos body weight category, has the experience of competing in the Sydney 2000 Paralympics to help her lead Malysia's challenge in Athens |
The recently completed 12th Malaysian Paralympic Games helped raise awareness amongst the Malaysian public. Increasing Government involvement plus a cash incentive scheme whereby athletes breaking World Paralympic records get a bonus of US$780 (US$260 for breaking Malaysian national records) gives some impetus to their Paralympic challenge.
A good performance in Athens will give encouragement to future disabled Malaysian athletes.
