Group A Round-Up (Group B here)
Canada 76 v Brazil
55
GB 48 v Italy 51
France 53 v Australia
74
The 3 Group A matches played this morning finished more or less according to the form book. Easy wins for Canada (tournament favourites) and Australia plus a close 3 point victory for Italy over a disappointing GB team.
Canada started slowly in their match against outsiders Brazil, but came out blazing in the second quarter. Captain Patrick Anderson put together 28 points. Canada produced a steady performance in all positions.
The same can't be said for the GB team against European Champions
Italy.
Whilst the score was close throughout the
GB shooters missed more chances than they normally would - and they had plenty
of them (68 shots at the net compared to only 52 by the Italians).
Sadly GB Finish the match with just 18 baskets from 68 total field goal attempts.
Which means that nearly 1 in 4 shots at goal were
missed.
GB are not going to win any medals like that.
Canada play GB in their next match, the experience of the GB team may help
them deal with the pressure they will be under to get a result from the Canadians.
Not much competition in the other Group A match between Australia and France. Australia led by captain Troy Sachs demolished the team from France. The French were always going to be the under dogs, but they were never really in the game from the start.
Canada, Australia and Italy are a step closer to the next round. The fourth place in the group for qualification looks like being a dog fight between GB, France and Brazil
