Group B Round-Up (Group A here)
USA 54 v Japan 46
Greece 33 v Iran
81
Germany 63 Holland
52
This afternoon's group B basketball had the surprise factor that was missing in the Group A matches. The defeat of Holland by arch rivals Germany leaves the Group wide open for Iran to grab the fourth spot.
Iran were clear winners in their opening game against hosts Greece. It's not often that any team gets a 48 point winning margin at the elite level and Iran will savour this victory on their Paralympic basketball debut. And with nearly 9000 (Greek) spectactors to witness it.
Hopefully the Greek team won't cave in during their next games quite so easily.
Ralf Schwarz was unstoppable
for the German's finding the basket for 20 points and he was todays highest
scorer. Key to the Dutch downfall was difficult to pinpoint, but the low ratio
of 3 point conversions (1/10) didn't help.
In the USA - Japan game, the US came out ahead despite trailing at half time
23-25. Japan were cool under pressure, whereas the American nerves were evident
in the first half.
As with the GB team in Group
A the Japanese had more chances on goal than the USA but the conversion
rate of 21 baskets from 63 shots is nowhere
near good enough at this level.
Group B is still up in the air, the Germans probably have
the edge with their tough win.
Holland need to rebound quickly in their next game to stay in the tournament.
